This year is an important milestone for ProTrans International – 2018 marks our 25th year as a leader in the logistics industry. Over the past 25 years, ProTrans has stayed a steady presence in the industry and has found its niche in the 3PL and Consolidation market. To help celebrate this year we are celebrating 25 people who have dedicated years of service to help shape ProTrans into the organization that we know today.
Our featured profile today is Hiram Ramirez, Director of Account Development for ProTrans de Mexico. Hiram has been with ProTrans for 16 years. What position(s) have you held since working with ProTrans?
I started with ProTrans in Nov 2002 working as a part-time employee, as an In-house for a new ProTrans client. I actually took the job while I was still in college so it was perfect for me. With time, ProTrans offered me a full-time job in Customer Service handling multiple accounts in the state of Chihuahua. Later on, I occupied a supervisor role as Lead Customer Service for a ProTrans client in North Mexico. ProTrans has always experienced double-digit growth and it did not pass too much time when I applied for the position of Customer Service Manager for Mexico. It was great for me because I got to know all of the customers from different areas. Also back then there was a huge trend for VMI type business so ProTrans opened a Warehouse in Chihuahua and I was given the opportunity as a Facility Manager while keeping my responsibilities for the CSR Group. It was good for me, always learning and new experiences.
About 2 years later I was invited to join ProTrans’ sales team for Chihuahua City. I was 50/50 Ops and Sales, a lot of time did not pass and then I transitioned to 100% sales. I had my first experiences in sales when I was in Chihuahua 7+- years ago. As ProTrans continued to grow business I was given additional territories in the state of Sonora, and then an opportunity came for a relocation to the state of Baja California. Now I’m married with 2 kids and I have moved to beautiful Tijuana, Baja California 4 years ago. I am now the Director of Account Development for Sonora and Baja and I hope to get my hand back in Chihuahua soon, so it goes 15 years back from a part-time job to a full-time job in sales.

All of us had a Blackberry! And a NEXTEL. If you did not have one, you were disconnected. What was the last thing you heard or saw which made you laugh out loud?
My sons birthday, he pushed his own head into the birthday cake as soon as we finish the happy birthday song; he gave no chance to anyone and did it to himself! That was funny. What hobbies do you enjoy?
I enjoy fishing with my children, quiet place like a lake, river, etc and hours of talking to them. We also enjoy making home improvements because my children get involved and enjoy using the tools. Cats or dogs? Or other pets?
I have to say both; I have 2 dogs and my daughters’ crazy cat. What excites you so much that it keeps you awake the night before?
My children’s competitions, I am more worried about the competitions than they are.
My daughter is a swimmer and also competes in gymnastics and practices ballet. My son, same gymnastics and he also does Taekwondo. My wife and I are crazy about them trying to keep up with their schedule and competitions; they just go to every competition and have fun. What is the one thing you have waited in line the longest for?
Mexican Passport application, it takes about 4 hours of standing in line. Since starting with ProTrans, what is the biggest change you have seen/experienced with the company?
As ProTrans continues to grow we need new processes and technology. I think recently we took a big step into technology and have become not only a logistics company, but a software company and that takes ProTrans to another level in the logistics industry. What way has the industry changed since you started with ProTrans?
I remember at some time everyone wanted to have a VMI/CMI solution, then that goes away! We are back to short lead time and JIT inventories, so warehouses near plants are gone. However, I think ProTrans has marked a trend by producing optimized solutions compared to a traditional procurement strategy. What industry trends do you see emerging in the upcoming years?
E-commerce definitely has disrupted logistics and will continue to change and adapt to consumer habits. Also, companies that provide their customers with a private transport network, through mobile application software. I think its matter of time when they get very involved in the freight transportation business. Self-driving trucks, it’s interesting the advances in Technologies. This industry trend will definitely have an impact in the upcoming years in the way we do business.
What is the one thing in this world you are most proud of?
My wife, we met when couple years before I started with ProTrans and she has been my trigger. She pushes me and encourages me to take opportunities and she has always been there for me. I am very proud and thankful to her for all her support and also I am very proud of my Parents, they are my example to follow. What are you passionate about?
My family, they do their best in everything, and it’s an example to me. Also, I like logistics; I’ve worked in different roles and it has always been a great learning experience. If you could take a paid year off, what would you do with the time?
I will check with the wife first and she will pick Travel for sure, so It will have to be 50/50. In my case I like to be more involved in the community, I live in a city of “floating population”. People come and go because it’s a border city and strategic with the US. There are a lot of families with needs, food or shelter, and you sometimes see children and it makes you want to do something. We all have to cheer for the Cruz Azul! What has compelled you to stay with ProTrans for as long as you have?
Opportunities to continue growing! At this moment I feel like 2 years ago or 5 years ago, I can still grow here!! I can still add value here.
